Nintendo released their quarterly financial report for the 1st Quarter of the current fiscal year this morning, and it reveals some interesting tidbits about their business over the last handful of months.
We received updated figures for both the Switch and Switch 2 (which I'll touch on in a post later on), as well as for their best selling titles for both platforms. They also provided a chart of upcoming releases and their release dates/windows, reconfirming that everything is still coming out at the previously announced times, which is unsurprising, but always nice.
However, as you've probably gathered from the headline, there's one specific tidbit I want to highlight for how simultaneously surprising and encouraging it is for Nintendo's quirkier, nicher titles.
The report reveals that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, not even four months after launching back in April of this year, has already sold a frankly STAGGERING 7.94 million units. That is incredibly impressive for a funny little Mii game, and perhaps shows that Miis still have incredible appeal.
Now, I knew Living the Dream was doing well, as it's been a fixture at the top of the eShop charts since it launched, and it felt like everyone was playing it when it came out. But I can't say I expected it to sell this much this quickly. It's an encouraging sign, and hopefully suggests we could get more Tomodachi Life games- or, really, Mii games in general- down the line, as there's clearly still a market for them.
Other notable figures from the report show that Pokemon Pokopia has performed quite well, selling 3.68 million units outside of Japan so far (sales from Japan aren't reported here, as The Pokemon Company published the game there).
Other Switch 2 games received updated figures as well, with Mario Kart World far and away leading the way at 15.39 million units sold in spite of its controversial $80 price tag (which, for the record, I still think is egregious, but it is what it is). Just like its predecessor on Switch 1, it very much seems to be on track to being the Switch 2's best-selling game overall, with the current next highest seller being Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.78 million units, not even a third of World's figure.
All that said, I'm very happy to see Tomodachi Life performing so well, as it's easily one of my favorite games of the year so far, having logged upwards of 90 hours into the game to date. Though I haven't touched it in a bit, mainly because I've been busy with more recent releases like Star Fox, Rhythm Heaven Groove, and Splatoon Raiders. I should really pay my island a visit sometime soon...
